McCain Wants to Stay in Iraq Forever!

Okay, Dems. If John McCain is the GOP nominee, this is how we beat him! Play the following clips over repeatedly, in which McCain says that he's fine with us being in Iraq 100 years or even 1,000 years! Like Bush, he has explained our presence in Iraq with permanent bases like our presence in South Korea. He claims Americans are fine with having foreign bases everywhere--but the rest of the world isn't! Before the end of the Cold War, sure. But even in Europe, the complaint is that Americans never leave. Much of the world refers to us as an "empire of military bases" to enforce our free trade deals. They see this as a form of colonialism whether or not that is objectively true. And the Muslim world ESPECIALLY wants our bases gone--they are recruiting tools for extremist groups. Our building bases in Iraq makes Osama bin Laden's case for him. And, McCain to the contrary, the U.S. wants out of Iraq, NOW. So, here are the clips to keep playing over and over in the general election if McCain gets the GOP nomination.

Of course, Ron Paul is the only candidate -- of any stripe -- that wants to completely shut down our military bases in friendly countries and bring our troops (all of them!) home.

No, Robert, Rep. Dennis Kucinich also wants to do that. And Ron Paul has many other problems--especially his economic policies. And that is not even considering the rumors that he has deep ties to racist and anti-semitic organizations.

Michael, I've looked at these videos. I am reluctant to criticise McCain. Even though I disagree with him on so many issues, I respect him greatly. I can only imagine his family's anxiety and worry those 5 1/2 years he was being tortured in a Vietnam POW camp. If elected President, I have no doubt he will seek to end this practice.

I happen to agree with him that the American public, as a whole, will have no problem leaving troops in Iraq indefinitely as long as they are not dying in combat. I know several who have gone over there to work for Halliburton/KBR. My own son has even talked about it. I shudder at the thought of that.

The occupation of Iraq is not personally touching that many lives here in America.

Marty, I also respect McCain. He has done good work in the Senate on things that other Republicans wouldn't touch, such as campaign finance reform and comprehensive immigration reform. He is the only GOP candidate besides the quirky Ron Paul who is against torture.

But none of that is a reason to refrain from criticism when it is due--like now. When a politician tries to do something wrong or stupid, like this, I will speak out about it. I don't care who they are or how much respect they deserve on other matters. NO ONE gets a free pass--that kind of blind loyalty is what led us to the mess we are in today.
